Around the world, as protests and demonstrations take place, young women are often leading the conversations and making their demands for the betterment of all people. This year, the International Day of the Girl Child is being celebrated with the mantra that girls are “Unscripted and Unstoppable.”
From issues ranging from environmental protection and the rights of girls to school and places of worship to the issues of child marriage and sex-based violence, girls are talking about current events and policy in ways that are being noticed and heard.
Flying a pink banner in solidarity with the girls of the world is a show of support for the future leaders who seek to make the world a better place. The UN acknowledges that girls have moved beyond mere dreaming and into the realm of making real their goals of education and preparation for the workplace and entrepreneurship
Each October 11, the world is asked to stand with the girls of the world to encourage improvements in their health and well being, and also to encourage these future presidents and prime ministers to pursue their passions.
In fact, every woman who will celebrate Business Women’s Week in October was once herself a young girl who may have faced discouragement because of her sex! That so many girls are expressing interest and aptitude for leadership and business is a wonderful thing!
A number of studies show that the better girls are educated, and the more access they have to educational resources as women in society and culture, the better the entire family will do. These benefits are measurable in terms of economics, physical health and even social standing. The girl today who sees herself as more than someday being only a wife, or only exploring the world with the permission of her father or husband, is likely to become a lawmaker or a professor who can influence her society and her culture in ways that will empower others.
While there are gains to be made for girls around the globe, progress is sure for confident young women. Girls should be able to find inspiration in the example of environmentalist and Nobel Prize winner, Wangari Maathai, who came to recognize her own power, “Finally I was able to see that if I had a contribution I wanted to make, I must do it, despite what others said. That I was OK the way I was. That it was all right to be strong.”
And the strength of girls is what makes them “Unscripted and Unstoppable.”
